Baseline

Crystal Nguyen

Baseline is a multi-disciplinary theatre work that explores how society defines “normalcy” and wellness, challenging the rigid standards set by capitalist and colonial systems. Rooted in personal experiences of illness, grief, and cultural displacement, Baseline follows a disabled Vietnamese education migrant through shimmering moments in time, weaving fragments of a collective self-portrait.

Using humour and exaggeration, Baseline questions the idea that wellness is an individual responsibility, instead highlighting the collective struggles and resilience of those impacted by inequality. It invites audiences to reflect on their relationship with societal norms and systems of power and examine how societal and political baselines can enforce, segregate and unify our own relationship to these systems.

Where we are and the history that precedes us informs how we work and how we move forward.
