A play in development by Palawa & Wiradjuri theatre maker Nicola Ingram, explores the complexity of relationships that First Nations people carry with their family, community and the system. How far would you go to dismantle a system that has tried to destroy you over and over again?
The script is inspired by the dialogue and protests surrounding the Brighton Bypass, a site where an archaeological survey was found to contain the oldest evidence of human habitation in the southern hemisphere in the path of a planned major highway.
This is the catalyst for four Aboriginal characters to navigate questions of identity, responsibility and bureaucracy. Giving voice to those conversations that are often held behind closed doors, between Aboriginal families and Community, and by individuals that work for a government making decisions on behalf of a Community who aren’t at the table. Who has a right to make decisions on behalf of a culture?
