THE FIZZ is a ridiculously CAMP, capital ‘F’ FUN, and DEEPLY silly story for intergenerational audiences about a topic we rarely talk about…death.
THE FIZZ is a new play with songs by BEAT Entertainment’s Samuel Gaskin, Johnny Hamilton (RECKŌNING, AUNTY), and Yve Blake (Fangirls, Mackenzie).
Based on the lived experiences of the lead artists, THE FIZZ is about a family with 2 Mums (Mumma and Mummy). We enter the story when Mummy has recently passed. We follow the two children who are coping with grief in very different ways, Jack (the younger child) is angry and internalising, whilst Bella (the older one) is controlling everything possible in an attempt to contain her grief.
Providing an alternative way of looking at life and death, the work uses the ‘Fizz’ to represent the physical world, the here and now and the ‘Non-Fizz’ to represent the world that comes before and afterwards. At the top of the play, the MC/Narrator, a flamboyant version of ‘Death’ explains this concept to us, immediately setting the tone for audiences. It provides a clean slate, a new way to approach this often considered taboo topic for young people.
