SAMPAI, TAK SAMPAI

Jumaadi and Michael Toisuta

Sampai, Tak Sampai (arrive, not arrive) is a new performance work
by Michael Toisuta and Jumaadi that explores migration, inspired by the Javanese tradition of ‘boyongan’ where entire communities carry belongings – sometimes whole houses – during relocation. The work explores migration through a deeply personal lens, weaving together Jumaadi’s distinctive visual imagery with an intricate soundscape that traces the journey of musical notes. Drawing inspiration from the sonic landscapes of mosques, marketplaces, and social gatherings, the project will feature a unique musical collaboration with Suwandi Widianto, an expert in Padalungan music that emerges from the fusion of Javanese and Madurese musical traditions.

This project investigates mark-making as a central artistic process— whether through drawing, sound, light, or movement. The artists plan to re-examine familiar technologies, such as overhead projectors, while incorporating vintage slide projectors and video projection. These elements will be paired with site specific audio systems, enriching the sensory experience of the work. Jumaadi, the sole performer, will use drawing, painting, and shadow-making to navigate this dynamic environment, while Michael provides sound design and direction. Ruth Little, most recently at Sydney Theatre Company and Akram Khan Company is dramaturg on the work, and will support Michael and Jumaadi to build their performance language, bringing together visual design, sound, movement and projection.
