About Jumaadi
Jumaadi is an Indonesian-born, Sydney-based artist working in drawing, painting, installation, and performance. His works feature in major collections, including the NGA Canberra, AGNSW, and MCA. Since earning his MFA from the National Art School in 2008, he has exhibited internationally, including Asia, Russia, the UK, and the USA, as well as representing Australia at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea and the Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane.
Jumaadi is influenced by personal experience as well as the political and aesthetic lineages of his homeland, including Wayang Kulit, shadow puppet plays originating in Java and Bali. This shadow theatre work can be seen in The Sea is Still a Mystery, Perahu-Perahu, and Shadows from the Land of Exiles.
About Michael Toisuta
Michael is an Indonesian-Australian sound designer and composer based in Sydney. He has worked internationally in theatre, dance, film, and video art. Key credits include Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (Sydney Theatre Award winner), Perahu-Perahu (Sydney Festival 2022), The Sugar House (Belvoir), and Richard 3 (Bell Shakespeare). His sound design has been seen in video art installations include Habitat 2018 (Asia Pacific Triennial), Habitat 2017 (The National at Art Gallery of NSW) and short films Woodlands (Barcelona Film Festival) and Jyoti (Festival Silhouette, France).
