Gravity Dolls

Melbourne

Gravity Dolls’ multidisciplinary, feminist practice combines contemporary circus, physical theatre, and original new writing to provoke a powerful emotional response in the audience that activates positive change. Our work is a stark collision of often brutal and confronting themes with those evoking compassion and awareness to challenge power structures in existing environmental and social hegemonies.

Since forming in 2014 we have presented across Australia, had multiple tours programed with RAV and were the first circus company programed for the highly competitive Poppy Seed Theatre Festival. In 2020 we were selected for Circus Oz and Melbourne Fringe’s “Springboard”; a professional development program to transition Gravity Dolls into making work for main stages and major arts festivals. In addition to making and touring new work, Gravity Dolls run weekly circus classes and produce the Aerial Arts Festival out of our studio in Northcote.

Since establishing our own space in 2019, we have created programs designed to support our fellow independent artists, with a priority on creating a welcoming environment for marginalised voices.

Through our own experience we understand that affordability, access times and internal culture are contributing factors to certain artists not feeling welcome in training and development spaces.

To address this, our Open Training and Rehearsal and Development programs have been designed to create a culture based on inclusivity and diversity.

In everything we do, we acknowledge that we live on Aboriginal land and constantly learn from the wisdom of First Peoples.

Where we are and the history that precedes us informs how we work and how we move forward.
