Red Stitch Actors Company

Red Sky Morning is a lyrical exploration of dislocation and the need to connect told through the experience of a father, a mother and their teenage daughter over the course of one life-changing day. The play confronts head on the impact of depression and isolation in regional Australia.

Red Sky Morning was the first fully fledged production developed through the Red Stitch Writer’s programme, an initiative set up by the company to promote local writers to help develop new original works for Red Stitch seasons. Red Stitch Writers provide a 12 month playwright residency assist in the development of the work through regular meetings with the dramaturg and workshops with ensemble members.

Red Sky Morning won the 2007 RE Ross Trust Development Award and premiered in September 2008 enjoying a successful season. It was described as ‘Play of the Year’ by the Sunday Age was nominated for Best Production and won the Greenroom Award for Best New Writing in 2008. It was chosen for remount in June 2009 by The Arts Centre (Melbourne) as part of their Full Tilt season (the Arts Centre’s development programme).

Founded in 2002, Red Stitch Actors Theatre has built a reputation as one of Melbourne’s leading independent theatre companies. Run by actors for actors, Red Stitch company members are united by a determination to make their own work, strengthen their craft and tell meaningful stories.

Red Stitch received the Fringe Festival performance award in 2002 and since 2003 have received many Green Room Awards including ‘Significant Contribution to Independent/Fringe Theatre’. Since 2004, Red Stitch ensemble members have been nominated each year in the Best Male/Female Actor categories. In 2007 The Green Room Awards Association placed Red Stitch in the ‘Companies’ category alongside State Theatre funded companies MTC and Malthouse, winning Best Direction (Denis Moore, Harvest) and Best Production (Harvest) categories. In 2009 Red Stitch Actors Company were made a key organisation by the Australia Council for the Arts.
