I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain

Gabrielle Nankivell

Mobile States Cluster Tour 2011

I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain is a visual poem for anyone who has taken the enchanting qualities of their broken world and built a fairytale as inspiration to survive.

The performance considers ‘struggle’ as an inherent quality of being human. Both deeply personal and universal, struggle is a multi-faceted player – beautiful, inspiriting and powerful, insufferable and harsh. Timeless and indiscriminate…struggle just is.

The evocative collaboration between movement, text, sound and light is accentuated by simple staging and encourages space for the imagination of the audience.

The visceral connection between performer and audience is driven by a distinctly powerful physicality where every movement is realised in the moment as if it is being played for the first time.

The resulting performance is a ride for the senses of performer and audience alike, embracing fear, laughter, tears and irony as the story of each unfolds. Subtle, stirring, humorous and even momentarily cliché, the mood of the performance is the intricacy of the human creature – reflected on stage.

I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain is brought to you in the spirit of sitting in a chopping, changing, hurtling world full of dishevelled perfection – a world where the individual meets the collective and you and I are equal.

“An accomplished and moving work”
Dance Australia

“This is humanity stripped bare: a catalogue of fears, hopes, dreams – and dreams-crushed – are made temporarily ethereal before vanishing in darkness…I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain is another impressive contribution to contemporary dance”
Laneway Magazine (Melbourne)
