Framed

De Quincey Co

Two women are literally framed, at the intersection of visual art, theatre, dance, music and installation.

The piece focuses on the eight emotional states of the Natyasastra, the cornerstone of traditional Indian arts practice, and explores the relationship between the two women of different ages and different cultures. It involves Maori dancer Victoria Hunt working with Tess de Quincey, generating an emphasis on cultural practice in the Asia Pacific area.

Integral to the piece is Michael Toisuta’s compelling sound composition Homage to Ligeti which takes its inspiration from Györgi Ligeti’s Poème Symphonique for 100 Metronomes, first performed in Holland in 1963. With its thick and numerous superimposed grids, intricate patterns emerge which result in changing rhythmic structures; unpredictable patterns growing out of the opening homogeny.

FRAMED is part of the “embrace” series. The video below is an excerpt of the previous version of the work, embrace: GUILT FRAME, featuring Peter Snow as Performer.

On embrace: GUILT FRAME…
“…the 40-minute journey is as mesmerising as it is inexplicably profound. …the work is elegant, simple, complex, profound, stark, elusive – yet never daunting. It is wonderfully easy to watch and very effecting.” Australian Stage

“…in its powerful exploration of the mystery and motivation of our moods and emotions, this performance is as riveting as any action movie, and a lot more satisfying.” The Age
